It's about believing a fairy tale. That belief is something no one can take from another. Trauma, abuse, 'life', can all push someone to forsake belief or even to hold tighter to it. The reasons for refusing to accept presented reality are many and deeply personal. You can choose to believe out of fear of reality, out of hope of better things just beyond the veil and the chance to see some bleedthrough, or out of a realization that consensus reality is more the fairy tale. I honestly don't know which fairy tale to believe, and there's enough tension between the easily observable and the subtle stuff of 'spirit' that I can't not consider both.
Thus it is not by incessant care that we become faithful and exact in the smallest things, but simply by a love which is free from the reflections and fears of restless and scrupulous souls. - Fénelon
